The term ‘salirophilia’ is derived from the French word ‘salir’, which means ‘to pollute’. To ‘pollute oneself’ was formerly used for masturbation in men. ‘Dirty’ and ‘filthy’ are still the most frequent negative associations with sexual activity or desires.

These associations are undoubtedly related to the man’s ejaculation when he reaches the summit of sexual pleasure. In sexual intercourse, this ejaculation is hidden. A boy who masturbates always faces the problem of how to prevent stains that might be seen by others. Many boys and girls who make love and manually satisfy one another, have to deal with the ejaculate in a comfortable way, especially in the beginning, when they have sex without intercourse. Often some awkwardness continues to exist, or it results in an unpleasant feeling after intercourse when sperm runs out of the vagina. This feeling of having done something dirty easily associates with a slight feeling of depression that many experience after orgasm. Well known, of course, is the use of sexual and other ‘dirty’ words for swearing and cursing. A typical confusion arises in a society that uses the word ‘fuck’ in all sorts of negative and dirty connotations, when at the same time it refers to the most supreme pleasure-giving experience which everybody seeks.

Salirophilia: being dirty

Thus ‘being dirty’ is also something that is supremely nice in a secret sort of way. Not only sperm, but also saliva, sweat, vaginal secretion, are substances that are commonly considered to be unclean, but enhance arousal in sexual play. Oral sex, which involves the exchange of bodily fluids in the mouth, plays an important role in more advanced sexual activity. Also the whispering of obscene words can cause strong feelings of intimacy or lust. It is not unusual for experienced lovers to pee on each other, to make love wearing dirty clothes, or to cover each other in all kinds of edible or inedible substances.

Salirophilia: eating of excrements (coprophilia)

The most extreme form of salirophilia is probably the eating of excrements (also known as ‘coprophilia’). Even this is not as outlandish as it may seem. A lover in a state of arousal may become highly excited by discovering, during oral sex, minuscule bits of faeces stuck to hairs around the anus of his or her loved one.
As with the other variants, salirophilia, especially coprophilia, may become an ‘obsession’ that is practised alone or with the help of a prostitute. To defecate in the open air in a deserted place or a forest seems to go along with what is described by the subject as a kind of ‘anal’ orgasm. Defecating on a prostitute’s breasts is an extreme and old form of ‘filthy’ behaviour, which gives some men extraordinary pleasure. Whether it epitomises the total subservience of women, as many tend to think nowadays, is doubtful. Rather, it is an extreme form of individual, autistic, sexual gratification at the orgasmic stage, in which the self is disconnected from the partner, even though the partner is an essential part of the preceding arousal. This element of ‘egoism’ as a requirement for reaching an orgasm is well-known and commonly recommended by sex therapists to ‘normal’ couples.
